MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady on Friday, due to limited demand, traders said. Prices are likely to fall slightly and then stabilise, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady due to limited buying, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. A few mills that did not cut prices the previous day, lowerd rates by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg on Friday, but it did not have any impact on the average mill prices, he said. Traders are not stocking up sugar at the moment as they want to liquidate the existing stocks before the financial year ends, Gupta said.
Prices had risen due to concern that the sales quota for March announced by the government was lower than requirement. However, prices could not sustain at higher levels and fell by INR 60-INR 70 per 100 kg. The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for March at 2.25 million tonnes. The quota for the month was unchanged from February but 2.2% lower than 2.30 million tonnes in March 2025.
Sweetener prices in Maharashtra were steady due to need-based demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices may fall by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg before stabilising, he added.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 9,900-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,805-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1814 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up nearly 1% at 15.50 cents per pound. Sugar prices also finding support due to supply disruptions from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Covrig Analytics, the closure of the strait has curbed approximately 6% of the world's sugar trade, constraining refined sugar output. End
