MUMBAI – Prices of tur and masur were steady Friday while prices of chana showed a mixed trend in key spot markets of the country, traders said. Tur prices were unchanged amid low market activity, they said. Prices of chana rose in some markets on lower arrivals amid need-based demand from millers, they said. Prices of masur were unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,550-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices were unchanged due to need-based demand from millers, he said. While arrivals of the new rabi crop were expected to increase this time of the year, many farmers are holding back stocks to sell them to the government instead, he said. "The registration process and preparation for government procurement is strong this year. Many farmers are choosing to sell their crop to the government, so arrivals are a bit lower in the market," he said. The government is procuring the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than prevailing spot market prices, he said.
Prices of chana are expected to be range-bound with a positive bias in the near term as arrivals of the new rabi crop are expected to stay on the lower side as government procurement is expected to be robust, Jain said. A steep rise in prices is unlikely even if arrivals fall significantly, as no spike in demand is expected in the short term, he said.
In Delhi, prices of chana rose by INR 50 from Thursday to INR 5,650-INR 5,675 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,975-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices are unchanged due to tepid market activity, he said. "Both demand and supply of tur are down at the moment, so prices are unchanged," he said. Arrivals of the new kharif crop have declined, while sluggish sales of tur dal, or processed tur, is affecting demand for tur, he said. Prices are expected to remain in this lower range for the rest of March, he said. "They (prices) won't go much below INR 8,000 per 100 kg for the rest of the month, it will remain in this range," he said.
The market expects demand to rise in April, which is likely to support prices, Gupta said. The government's procurement could also support prices in the near term, he said. Tur procurement has already crossed 200,000 tonnes and could rise to as much as 500,000 tonnes, with the government willing to absorb higher volumes if arrivals increase, a government official told Informist Thursday.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,050-INR 8,150 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,750-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are steady due to the absence of fresh cues, he said. Most of the new rabi crop is expected to be purchased by the government, which is likely to support prices in the near term, he said. The government is procuring the legume at the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg, he said. "The procurement will begin in full swing in April," he said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,900-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 6,800-INR 7,400 per 100 kg. End
