MUMBAI – The government Thursday said it has augmented natural gas supplies and raised production of urea by 23% to increase availability of fertilisers ahead of the kharif season. Efforts are also underway to diversify imports to insulate Indian farmers from global supply chain volatilities, it said in the release.

 

The government has successfully concluded Empowered Pool Management Committee bidding for natural gas, a step that will enhance availability of urea. By securing an additional 7.31 million metric standard cubic metres per day of gas on a spot basis, the total supply to urea plants has risen by 23% to 39.31 mscmd from 32 mscmd, according to the release.

 

Domestic urea production is projected to climb by almost 23% to 67,000 tonnes per day from 54,500 tonnes per day. "Crucially, this brings the plants' gas requirement fulfilment to 76% of their average needs, up significantly from the previous 62%," according to the release.  End
