NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all the spices traded lower on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday, weighed down by rising arrivals in the market, analysts said. Prices of coriander and jeera also fell after having risen for two consecutive days.

The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down around 1.1% at INR 11,484 per 100 kg, as rising arrivals weighed on prices and the contract faced resistance at higher levels, SMC Global Securities said in a note. Prices are likely to trade with a "weak bias" due to subdued buying interest and rising pressure from arrivals, the brokerage said.

The most-active April contract of JEERA was down 1% at INR 22,160 per 100 kg mainly due to arrival of the new crop in several markets, SMC Global said. Arrivals have begun in key producing regions and are expected to pick up momentum from March, which has created some near-term pressure on prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Comfortable supplies and relatively weak export demand, supported by adequate existing stocks, have also weighed on market sentiment, the brokerage said.

However, the downside remains limited as overall production for the season is expected to decline. Output is estimated to fall around 5% to 513,000 tonnes this year, as per the brokerage.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down almost 1% at INR 14,750 per 100 kg as arrivals picked up. However, SMC Global expects prices to "stay firm" in the range of INR 11,540-INR 11,680 per 100 kg underpinned by expectations of lower output and tightening availability, the brokerage said. Bulk arrivals from the Marathwada region are yet to begin and are expected to enter the market in the coming days, it said.
