MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell again in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday as demand was subdued, traders said. Markets in Maharashtra were shut for Gudi Padwa festival. Sugar prices are likely to fall slightly in the coming days and then stabilise, traders added.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10-INR 25 per 100 kilograms due to sluggish demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Traders are not stocking up sugar at the moment as they want to liquidate the existing stocks before the financial year ends, Gupta said.

Prices had risen due to concern that the sales quota for March announced by the government was lower than requirement. However, prices could not sustain at higher levels and fell by INR 60-INR 70 per 100 kg. The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for March at 2.25 million tonnes. The quota for the month was unchanged from February but 2.2% lower than 2.30 million tonnes in March 2025.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were unavailable as markets were shut on account of Gudi Padwa. Prices may fall by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg before stabilising, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 25 at INR 3,900-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 25 at INR 9,900-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,805-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1706 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 2.2% at 15.12 cents per pound, tracking a rise in crude oil prices on the NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar.  End
