MUMBAI – Prices of most grains were unavailable as markets were shut for the Hindu New Years, traders said. In the few markets which were open, prices were steady as market activity was low amid the festivities, they said.
Prices of the new WHEAT crop in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,250-INR 2,450 per 100 kilograms, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Prices of the old wheat stocks were also steady at INR 2,180-INR 2,350 per 100 kg, he said. Arrivals of the old crop fell by 500 bags to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), while arrivals of the new crop rose by 20,000 bags to 45,000 bags, Mehta said. Prices were unchanged amid low activity as most market participants stayed away for festivities, he said.
Prices of wheat and MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were unavailable as the market was shut for Chaitra Sukhladi, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of wheat and RICE at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were also unavailable as the market was closed for Gudi Padwa, said wholesale trader Devendra Vora.
Prices of wheat and rice are expected to remain steady in the near term amid ample supply and some support from the government's procurement of both grains, Vora said. Prices of maize are likely to fall in the near term as arrivals of the new rabi crop increase, he said.
The market is monitoring the ongoing military conflict in West Asia for further cues on prices of basmati rice. An analysis of the current situation shows that although conditions appear challenging at present, more than six months remain before the arrival of the new basmati crop, said Ranjit Singh Jossan, vice president, The Basmati Rice Millers & Exporters Association, Punjab. As soon as the situation in West Asia improves, international prices of basmati rice are expected to move upward, he said. End
