MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were steady in key spot markers across the country, traders said. Prices of chana were unchanged amid limimted need-based demand even as arrivals declined amid robust procurement by the government, they said. Prices of tur were steady as low demand for the legume matched the low supply while prices of masur were unchanged amid a lack of cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,550-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are steady amid some need-based demand from millers and traders, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi crop have reduced as most farmers are selling their stocks to the government, he said.

The government is procuring chana at a minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prevailing market rate. "Most of the new arrivals are going to the government, only low-quality crop with misshapen kernels is coming to the market," Mangal said.

Arrivals are expected to remain low in the near term as farmers are expected to continue selling most of their crop to the government, Mangal said. While this is likely to support prices once need-based demand for the legume increases, a steep rise in prices is unlikely as the government could offload its stock to control rates, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,625 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,100 per 100 kg while prices of old tur were steady at INR 7,200-INR 7,550 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Around a dozen trucks carrying 20,000-25,000 kg each of the new tur crop and a truck or two with old tur arrived in the market, he said.

Prices are unchanged as demand and supply of chana is low and equally matched, Srinivas said. Arrivals of the new kharif crop have begun to reduce, with only 10–15 trucks arriving at the market daily, he said. Sluggish demand for tur dal, or processed tur, is also keeping tur purchases low, he said.

Prices are expected to increase in April, when retail demand for tur is expected to rise, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Demand for processed legumes, or dal, which is consumed alongside staple grains such as wheat, increases when arrivals of the latter rise, he said. "Once arrivals of the new wheat crop increase in April and prices fall, many wholesalers begin buying both wheat and tur in bulk to supply to small towns and villages," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,050-INR 8,150 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,750-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are unchanged because of a lack of strong cues, he said. Similar to chana, most of the new rabi masur crop arrivals are being purchased by the government at the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg, he said. Prices are expected to remain steady in the near term as the government's disposal of its stocks is expected to control prices, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,900-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 6,800-INR 7,400 per 100 kg.  End
