Maharashtra summer crop area dn 20% YoY at 288,985 ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area under summer crops in Maharashtra stood at 288,985 hectares as of Wednesday, down nearly 20% from 360,776 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season, which is the average of the last five years, is 444,109 hectares, of which 65% has been covered so far.
The area under summer paddy was 126,708 hectares, up from 120,873 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage slipped to 50,384 hectares from 66,395 hectares. The area under bajra fell to 20,632 hectares from 29,452 hectares, and that under jowar was down at 14,579 hectares, against 25,292 hectares a year ago.
Moong acreage in the state rose to 8,427 hectares from 7,147 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad fell to 968 hectares from 1,208 hectares.
The total area under all summer oilseeds so far was down at 65,697 hectares from 107,098 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under groundnut fell to 48,021 hectares from 74,886 hectares. Sesame acreage was down at 15,863 hectares from 23,943 hectares a year ago.
Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvest done between April and May. Besides rice, sesame and groundnut are grown during this period. Other major summer crops in the state are fruits and vegetables such as banana, pumpkin, and tomato.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 58% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared with 51.2% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
