NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange rose Wednesday. The rise in coriander prices was supported by expectation of reduced production and tightening supplies, traders said. Jeera inched up on projection of a decline in the crop size. Turmeric futures contracts rose as buyers shifted to need-based purchases.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 0.8% at INR 14,900 per 100 kilograms as arrivals remained below normal, analysts said. SMC Global Securities expects prices to move "sideways" in a slightly weaker range of INR 14,380–INR 15,180 per 100 kg amid need-based buying and a gradual increase in market arrivals, SMC Global Securities said in a report.
Current arrivals of turmeric account for only about 15% of the total anticipated seasonal inflow, suggesting that a significant portion of the crop is yet to reach the markets. That supply pressure may intensify in the coming weeks from the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, SMC said.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 1.2% at INR 11,630 per 100 kg, on expectation of reduced production and tightening supplies, SMC Global said. The tighter supply outlook, along with improved buying activity, continues to support the increased prices, the brokerage said.
The most-active April contract of JEERA was up 2.2% at INR 22,420 per 100 kg after projections by the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders suggested a decline of nearly 5% in the crop size to about 513,000 tonnes, SMC Global said. The sentiment is being supported by expectations of lower overall production this season, SMC said. However, the upside was limited by comfortable carry-forward stocks and relatively weak export demand, Kedia added.
Following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at the close of trading at 1700 IST:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Coriander Apr | NCDEX | 100 | 11,630 | 138 |
Jeera Apr | NCDEX | 100 | 22,420 | 480 |
Turmeric Apr | NCDEX | 100 | 14,900 | 122 |
