MUMBAI – Pre-monsoon activity has begun across India this week, easing some of the early surge in temperatures across many parts of the country in the first half of March, private weather agency Skymet said. Pre-monsoon snowfall in north India and thunderstorms over many parts in the rest of the country are expected to keep heatwaves at bay for the rest of March, the weather agency said.

 

The presence of multiple western disturbances caused unseasonal snowfall in many states across north India recently, and such weather is expected to continue for the next week as well, the weather agency said. Under the influence of other active weather systems, several parts of northeast India are also likely to record intense wet spells in the next five to seven days, the agency said.

 

The plains of north India, which include Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, may witness fairly widespread weather activity till Friday, the weather agency said. Maharashtra and adjoining parts of Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience pre-monsoon thunderstorms, bringing relief from extreme heat, especially across Vidarbha in Maharashtra, the agency said. Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal are likely to see the opening spell of thunderstorms between Saturday and Sunday, it said.

 

Pre-monsoon circulation and a north-south wind discontinuity over the interior parts of the South Peninsula may trigger weather activity between Wednesday and Saturday over south India, the weather agency said. Gujarat may witness the least weather activity, but the state will remain protected from any extreme heat during the next week.

 

As pre-monsoon activity, which usually prevails Mar-Mar, is being witnessed across many parts of India, no sharp rise in temperatures is expected over the country in the coming days, the weather agency said. Day temperatures could drop across many states in the next three to four days and stabilise thereafter, the agency said.  End
