MUMBAI – India's sugar production in the ongoing 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) season rose 10.5% on year to 26.2 million tonnes as of mid-March, the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association said in a release. A total of 157 mills were crushing sugarcane compared to 182 mills operating at the same time last year, it said.
Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh was 8.13 million tonnes as of Sunday, which is almost unchanged from 8.12 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. "At present, 78 mills are operational, compared to 83 mills which operated last year on the corresponding date," ISMA said.
In Maharashtra, sugar production reached 9.85 million tonnes as of mid-March up from 7.87 million tonnes, last year. Sugar output in Karnataka was 4.60 million tonnes as of Sunday, up from 3.92 million tonnes a year ago, the association said.
The smaller sugar-producing states, such as Gujarat recorded a fall in output while Tamil Nadu recorded a rise. As of Sunday, Gujarat's sugar output fell to 685,000 tonnes from 778,000 tonnes a year ago, while output in Tamil Nadu rose to 472,000 tonnes from 369,000 tonnes. Sugar output in other states was 2.48 million tonnes down from 2.67 million tonnes last year.
As the sugar season advances, the industry awaits an early upward revision of the minimum selling price, according to the release. Rising production costs and lower realisations are increasing financial pressure on mills, ISMA said. "Crushing season approaching its penultimate phase (is) ensuring comfortable sugar availability," it said. End
