MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur showed mixed trends, while prices of urad were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices were steady in some markets amid need-based demand from millers, but are likely to fall slightly in the next few weeks due to the absence of demand from stockists, they said. Tur prices fell in some markets due to low demand amid steady supply, they said. Urad prices were unchanged due to the absence of cues, they said.
CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,475-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices were unchanged amid some need-based demand from millers, he said. Typically, prices rise during this time of the year as stockists begin to purchase the legume in bulk, he said. However, this year, robust purchases by the government are discouraging stockists, he said. "Stockists think that the government will have a good stock now, and will be able to offload it any time they want — so they (stockists) won't be able to profit from selling their stocks during times of low availability," he said.
Most farmers are selling their crops to the government as the latter is purchasing them at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than prices prevailing in spot markets, Kedia said. However, with farmers expected to continue selling their stock to the government, arrivals in markets are likely to remain low, which could support prices in the near term, he said. "Stockists are inactive, so prices could fall by INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg in the next few weeks, but in a month or two low arrivals will raise prices," he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,626-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 7,950-INR 7,975 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices fell due to sluggish demand amid steady arrivals, he said. "We had assumed that tur production this year would be much lower because of reports of weather damage to the standing crop in Maharashtra, but there was nothing like that. We are still receiving good arrivals in Maharashtra," he said. Earlier in the year, below-normal night temperatures in most parts of interior Maharashtra were said to have damaged the standing crop, he said.
According to the second advance estimate released by the agriculture ministry, tur production in 2025-26 (Jul—Jun) is pegged at 3.45 million tonnes, slightly down from 3.5 million tonnes produced last year. The slight drop in production is likely due to crop loss and damage due to excessive rainfall in Oct-Sept in Karnataka, he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,100-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,200 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, they said. Prices were unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, they said.
Urad prices are expected to be range-bound with a slight positive bias in the near term, with the New Burma Urad SQ variety seen in the range of INR 8,650-INR 8,850 per 100 kg, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. If prices move above INR 8,850 per 100 kg, the market could turn more bullish, the association said. Many vessels are being rescheduled and not getting berthing on time, which may affect supply and support ready market demand if cargo arrivals are delayed, it said. End
