IMD sees hailstorms in many parts of northwest, east, central India till Sat

MUMBAI – Under the influence of multiple weather systems prevailing over northwest, east, and central India, hailstorms are likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, and over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan on Thursday and Friday, the India Meteorological Department said. Hailstorms are also likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, Vidarbha on Wednesday, Chhattisgarh on Wednesday and Thursday, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha on Friday and Saturday, the weather department said.
Heavy rainfall or snowfall is likely over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand on Friday and over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday and Friday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Friday, the department said.
These weather systems are also likely to cause a fresh wave of a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of the western Himalayan region from Wednesday to Friday, the weather bureau said. Similar weather is likely to persist over the plains of northwest India on Thursday and Friday, and over many parts of east India till Saturday, the bureau said.
Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are also likely over parts of Uttarakhand on Thursday and Friday, the weather department said. A thundersquall is typically a thunderstorm with a sudden, sharp increase in wind speed.
The presence of a western disturbance lying slightly to the northeast of the country and a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and adjoining Arunachal Pradesh is expected to cause a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over most parts of northeast India in the next five days.
Currently, a trough extends from north interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar across south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the weather bureau said. This is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karnataka till Saturday, over Andhra Pradesh till Friday, and over Kerala till Thursday, the weather department said.
Similar weather is also likely over parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada till Saturday, and over Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather department said.
With large-scale thunderstorm activity predicted over most parts of the country, normal to below-normal day temperatures are likely during the next seven days across the country, the weather bureau said. No significant heat wave conditions are likely during this period, the bureau said. End
