MUMBAI – India's oilmeal exports fell 22% on year to 257,961 tonnes in February, according to data released by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India Tuesday. In Apr-Feb, oilmeal exports were at 3.49 million tonnes, down from 3.93 million tonnes a year ago.

 

Exports of soymeal in February fell 33% to 112,869 tonnes from 168,725 tonnes a year ago. In Apr-Feb, soymeal exports were at 1.49 million tonnes, down from 1.94 million tonnes a year ago. "Indian soybean meal export during 4 months of new season Nov-Feb (of 2025-26 oil year) reported at 473,385 tonnes compared 916,906 tonnes during the same period of last year i.e. down by 48%, due to high price of Indian soybean meal in international market currently at $483 per tonne FOB (free on board) compared to soybean meal Arg.cif Rdm (Rotterdam) at $420 per tonne," the association said. Arg.cif Rdm refers to Argus Media price assessments for commodities delivered to Rotterdam, a key European trading hub. 

 

The military conflict in West Asia has significantly disrupted India's oilmeal exports, due to instability around the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, the association said. Around 20% of India's oilmeal exports destined for West Asia and 15?stined for Europe are at risk due to logistics and shipping disruptions, it said.

 

Exports of mustard meal fell over 29% on year to 99,208 tonnes in February. Exports of mustard meal during Apr-Feb fell to 1.60 million tonnes from 1.68 million tonnes a year ago. Exports of castorseed meal rose 30.6% on year to 21,763 tonnes in February, but fell nearly 9% on year during Apr-Feb to 250,502 tonnes, the association said. 

 

Exports of groundnut meal fell 94% on year to 196 tonnes in February, but were up over 17% on year at 24,277 tonnes in Apr-Feb. Increase in production of groundnut for the past two years has led to more crushing and export of groundnut meal during the period, the association said earlier.  

 

Exports of rice bran meal rose to 23,925 tonnes in February from 1,379 tonnes a year ago. In Apr-Feb, rice bran meal exports rose to 128,786 tonnes from 15,833 tonnes a year ago. The government has lifted the ban on export of de-oiled rice bran with effect from Oct. 3, 2025. In July 2023, the government had banned the export of de-oiled rice bran citing high domestic prices of cattle feed and milk products. 

 

In Apr-Feb, a total of 587,373 tonnes of oilmeal were exported from the Kandla port in Gujarat, down from 1.34 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. However, exports from Mundra port, also in Gujarat, were at 1.32 million tonnes, up from 862,359 tonnes a year ago, it said. In the same period, exports from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Navi Mumbai fell to 614,832 tonnes during this period from 640,495 tonnes a year ago, the association said.

 

China, South Korea, Bangladesh and Germany were the major importers of Indian oilmeals. During Apr-Feb, China imported 779,016 tonnes of oilmeals compared to 38,240 tonnes during the year-ago period. At the same period, South Korea imported 336,222 tonnes of oilmeals compared to 614,545 tonnes and Bangladesh imported 346,118 tonnes of oilmeals compared to 689,380 tonnes same period last year, according to the association.

 

Meanwhile, the association said that shipping companies are avoiding the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, causing detours that increase transit times and costs, which threatens the continuity of oilmeal exports to West Asia and Europe. The forced detour around the Cape of Good Hope adds 10–15 days to shipping journeys, causing delays and container shortages, it said. "The conflict has caused a surge in crude oil prices (crossing $100 per barrel) and increased insurance premiums for vessels, making shipments costlier and less viable," it said.
