Gujarat summer crop area up 1% on year at 573,622 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under summer crops in Gujarat was 573,622 hectares as of Monday, up over 1% from 567,062 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the summer crop season, which is the average of the last three years, is 1.18 million hectares, of which nearly 49% has been covered.
The area under paddy rose to 124,500 hectares from 123,205 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize was down at 4,239 hectares from 4,385 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra fell to 89,056 hectares from 100,582 hectares.
Moong acreage in the state so far was 25,709 hectares, up from 20,059 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad rose to 15,171 hectares from 9,332 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all summer oilseeds in the state was up at 102,322 hectares from 83,753 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under groundnut was 34,138 hectares, up from 24,292 hectares a year ago. Sesame acreage rose to 68,184 hectares from 59,461 hectares a year ago.
The area under vegetables rose to 58,627 hectares from 57,575 hectares a year ago. The area under onions, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 5,729 hectares, up from 5,591 hectares last year. Sugarcane acreage was up at 9,296 hectares from 9,207 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer. End
