MUMBAI – Indian sugar mills have dispatched 315,577 tonnes sugar for exports as of Feb. 28 in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept), the All India Sugar Trade Association said in a release. Out of the total quantity dispatched by mills and merchant exporters, 313,255 tonnes have been exported and 2,322 tonnes are waiting to be loaded, the trade body said.
Among the total exported quantity, 257,971 tonnes were white sugar, 53,664 tonnes refined sugar, and 1,620 tonnes raw sugar, the trade body said. Indian sugar was exported to the UAE, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Bhutan, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Kenya, Somalia, Nepal, Singapore and a few other countries, the trade body said. The UAE was the top importer of Indian sugar at 79,683 tonnes, followed by Afghanistan, Djibouti and Tanzania, it said.
The government had allowed exports of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar in the season ending September. Subsequently, on Feb. 13, it allowed export of an additional 500,000 tonnes sugar to help manage surplus sugar availability in the country. The additional export quantity will be made available to willing sugar mills only if they are able to export at least 70% of their allocated quantity by Jun. 30.
Unlike the earlier 1.5-million-tonne quota, which was exchangeable with domestic quota of any other mill, the present additional quota cannot be swapped. The genuine exporting mills need not pay any premium to mills sitting idle on tradeable quota. End
