MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh due to sluggish demand, said traders. In Maharashtra, sweetener prices were steady, traders said. The downtrend is likely to continue as demand will not pick up at the existing price, they added.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg as demand was poor, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Demand is not picking up as traders are waiting for prices to fall further, he said. Moreover, resellers are not eager to keep stock in pipeline as they want to liquidate the existing stocks before the financial year ends, Gupta said.
So far this month, prices of the sweetener have fallen about INR 40-INR 50 per 100 kg, he said. Prices had increased after the release of the March sales quota on concern of it being lower than requirement. However, prices have again fallen to their earlier levels as demand did not pick up, Gupta added. The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for March at 2.25 million tonnes. The quota for the month was 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in March 2025 but unchanged from February. Higher output of sugar in Uttar Pradesh also weighed on prices.
Sweetener prices in Maharashtra were steady due to limited demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall in the coming days as demand from eateries will be subdued, Kuvadia added.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,920-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in West Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,910-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in Central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,805-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1837 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 1.3% at 14.18 cents per pound, tracking a fall in crude oil prices on the NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices decrease the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar. End
