NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander rose while those of jeera fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Monday. Turmeric prices were up as arrivals remained below normal and coriander prices rose because of lower sowing area and a relatively weak crop outlook this season, analysts said. Jeera prices fell because of a rise in arrivals.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up around 1.3% at INR 11,386 per 100 kg, supported by lower sowing coverage and a relatively weak crop outlook this season, which has kept the supply tight, SMC Global Securities said in a note. Prices are expected to hold firm in the near term, aided by restocking demand from traders and stockists following recent inventory drawdowns, the brokerage said.
The most-active April contract of JEERA was down 1.4% at INR 21,830 per 100 kg, mainly due to the arrival of the new crop in several markets. Arrivals in the Unjha market were estimated at 40,000 bags, while total arrivals across Gujarat were reported close to 90,000 bags, as per SMC Global. Arrivals are expected to pick up from late March onward, which will add even more pressure on prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note.
However, the downside remains limited as overall production for the season is expected to decline. Output is estimated to fall around 5% to 513,000 tonnes this year, Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 0.3% to INR 14,794 per 100 kg, as current arrivals remain below normal and both domestic and export demand remain steady, as per Kedia Advisory. SMC Global expects prices to trade within the INR 14,140-INR 14,940 range in the near term. Bulk arrivals from the Marathwada region are yet to begin and are expected to enter the market in the coming days, which will add pressure to prices, Kedia advisory said.
