India's sugar output up 10% YoY at 26.2 mln tn as of Sun, says federation

MUMBAI – In the sugar season that started in October, mills in India produced 26.2 million tonnes of the sweetener as of Sunday, up over 10% on year, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. Sugar production has risen due to higher sugarcane yield and improvement in the recovery rate to 9.5% from 9.3% last year.
As of Sunday, 540 mills were operational across the country, against 533 units a year ago. According to the state-wise details provided by the federation, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh was 8.12 million tonnes as of Sunday, up from 8.1 million tonnes at the same time last year. However, sugarcane crushing in the state fell to 80.3 million tonnes from 84.3 million tonnes a year ago. There were 120 operational mills in the state, lower than 122 mills operating at the same time last year. The average sugar recovery rose to 10.15% from 9.60% last year.
Sugar production in Maharashtra surged over 25% to 9.85 million tonnes as of Sunday. The state's production rose as sugarcane crushing jumped around 25% to 103.7 million tonnes, coupled with a rise in sugar recovery rate to 9.5% from 9.45% a year ago. Maharashtra had 210 mills running as of Sunday, compared with 200 mills a year ago.
In Karnataka, sugar production was 4.6 million tonnes as of Sunday, up from 3.9 million tonnes a year ago. As of Sunday, 81 mills were running in the state against 79 mills last year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state rose to 8.65% from 8.5% last year, the federation said. End
