MUMBAI – The government has increased the base import price of all variants of palm oil and cut the base import price for crude soyoil, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said in a notification Friday. It has raised the base import price of crude palm oil by $9 per tonne, while for refined, bleached, and deodorised palm oil, crude palmolein and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil, the base import price has been raised by $10 per tonne, according to the notification.

 

For soyoil, the base import price has been cut by $29 to per $1,183 tonne. The Centre levies import duty ad valorem and reviews base import prices, depending on changes in global prices and foreign exchange rates. The government normally revises base import prices of edible oils every fortnight, and these are used to calculate the duty on these commodities being brought into the country. The base import prices of edible oils were last revised on Feb. 27.

 

India is the largest importer of edible oils. Palm oil accounts for bulk of the country's imports, with most of it purchased from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, which are the top producers of the commodity.

 

India's imports of crude palm oil rose significantly to 837,040 tonnes in February from 265,600 tonnes a year ago, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India. During Nov-Feb, crude palm oil imports were at 2.72 million tonnes compared to 1.38 million tonnes during the same period a year ago, it said. 

 

Refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil imports in February were at 10,649 tonnes compared with 109,301 tonnes a year ago. In Nov-Feb, only 22,237 tonnes of refined, bleached and deodorised palm oil were imported, compared with 593,801 tonnes a year ago, acccording to the association. Crude soyoil imports rose to 299,046 tonnes in February from 283,737 tonnes a year ago.
