NEW DELHI – The government has sanctioned procurement of about 2.2 million tonnes of tur under the price support scheme for kharif marketing year 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) as the Centre looks to build buffer stock, a senior official told Informist.

So far, government agencies have procured around 180,000 tonnes of tur, with procurement operations currently underway in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat, the official said. Of the total sanctioned quantity of 2.2 million tonnes, a majority of 967,000 tonnes has been sanctioned for Karnataka and about 337,000 tonnes for Maharashtra.

So far, procurement has been relatively slow because market prices of tur are still above the minimum support price in several states, limiting the quantity offered to government agencies, according to the official. This comes as the second advance estimates for crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) peg national tur production at 3.45 million tonnes, a 4.66?crease from the previous year.

Despite the sluggish start, the government expects procurement to rise further. It may purchase an additional 200,000 tonnes, lifting total procurement from the ongoing crop year to roughly 380,000 tonnes, according to the official.

Tur prices have been ruling slightly above the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg. Friday, tur prices in key market of Akola, Maharashtra, were at INR 8,150–INR 8,200.

Additionally, the government is already carrying around 550,000 tonnes of tur from the previous season. Last year, the government had been able to procure about half the sanctioned quantity of 1.3 million tonnes as prices were ruling below the minimum support price.

According to the official, even 400,000 tonnes of fresh procurement this season will be enough for the government to build a 1 million tonne buffer, allowing the government enough buffer to supply pulses to the market if required to curb price volatility.

Meanwhile, a decision on extending the current import policy for pulses, which is due for review soon, is yet to be taken, the official added.  End
