MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell Friday due to sluggish demand, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said. Prices could fall in the coming days as demand is likely to remain weak, they added.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 25 per 100 kg as demand was subdued at previous levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. In the resale markets too, traders cut prices by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg. The downtrend is likely to continue next week as well, as demand is unlikely to pick up, Gupta said.
So far this month, sweetener prices have fallen about INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kg, he said. Prices had increased after the release of the March sales quota on concerns of it being lower than requirement. However, prices have again fallen to their earlier levels as demand did not pick up, Gupta added. The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for March at 2.25 million tonnes. The quota for the month is 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in March 2025 but unchanged from February.
Amid the ongoing military conflict in West Asia, and fall in supply of liquefied petroleum gas, many restaurants and eateries are shut, which will subsequently impact demand for the sweetener. Hence, prices will be largely steady or down, traders said. In addition, higher output of sugar in Uttar Pradesh could weigh on prices.
Ex-mill prices of sugar in Maharashtra were steady due to need-based buying, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall in the coming days as demand from eateries will be subdued, Kuvadia added.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 25 at INR 3,900-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in West Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 25 at INR 3,910-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in Central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,805-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1555 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 0.1% at 14.36 cents per pound, tracking a fall in crude oil prices on the NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices decrease the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar. End
