NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander rose Friday while those of jeera fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange. Turmeric prices were up as arrivals remained below normal and coriander prices rose because of lower sowing coverage and a relatively weak crop outlook this season, according to analysts. Jeera prices fell because of rise in arrivals.

At 1405 IST, the most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up around 0.8% at INR 11,380 per 100 kg, supported by lower sowing coverage and a relatively weak crop outlook this season, which has kept the supply tight, SMC Global Securities said in a note. Prices are expected to hold firm in the near term, aided by restocking demand from traders and stockists following recent inventory drawdowns, the brokerage said.

The most-active April contract of JEERA was down 0.4% at INR 21,975 per 100 kg mainly due to arrival of the new crop in several markets. Arrivals in the Unjha mandi were estimated at 40,000 bags, while total arrivals across Gujarat were reported closed to 90,000 bags, as per SMC Global. Arrivals are expected to pick up March-end onward, which will add further pressure to prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note.

However, the downside remains limited as overall production for the season is expected to decline. Output is estimated to fall around 5% to 513,000 tonnes this year, as per the brokerage.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 2.1% at INR 14,850 per 100 kg as current arrivals are still below normal and both domestic and export demand remain steady, as per Kedia Advisory. The brokerage expects prices to trade within the INR 14,140-INR 14,940 range in the near term. Bulk arrivals from the Marathwada region are yet to begin and are expected to enter the market in the coming days, which will add pressure to prices, Kedia Advisory said.
