MUMBAI – The Cotton Association of India has raised the country's production estimate for the cotton year 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) by 350,000 bales to 32.05 million bales (one bale equals 170 kg). The association had earlier pegged the total cotton output at 31.70 million bales.

 

The association puts out its estimates every month on the basis of inputs received from associations of 11 cotton-growing states and other trade sources. Production of cotton in the north zone, comprising Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, is estimated at 2.9 million bales in 2025-26. In the north zone, the association has cut its view for cotton output in Punjab, upper Rajasthan and lower Rajasthan by 50,000 bales each. 

 

In the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, cotton production is projected at 19.1 million bales. The association has raised its output view for Maharashtra by 400,000 bales.

 

Production in the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is estimated at 9.5 million bales, according to the association. In the south zone, the association has raised its production estimate for Andhra Pradesh by 100,000 bales. Odisha and other states are likely to contribute 350,000 bales and 200,000 bales, respectively, to the country's total cotton production.

 

Total supply of cotton in 2025-26 is estimated at 42.8 million bales, against 39.3 million bales in the previous year. The association has cut its estimate for imports in 2025-26 to 4.7 million bales from the previous estimate of 5.0 million bales. Last year imports were at 4.1 million bales. The cotton body has raised India's cotton consumption view for the current cotton year to 31.5 million bales, it said in the release.  

 

Meanwhile, the association has maintained its cotton export estimate for 2025-26 at 1.5 million bales. The estimate for closing stock on Sept. 30 has been reduced to 9.8 million bales.
