NEW DELHI – Prices of chana fell across major markets on Thursday due to weak demand from snack manufacturers and steady arrivals, while those of tur were largely steady amid sluggish demand, traders said. Urad prices rose in some markets amid concerns that shipments from Myanmar could decline due to higher freight and insurance costs linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

 

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were down INR 25 from the previous day at INR 5,475–INR 5,500 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices declined due to sluggish demand, he said.

 

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, prices of chana were down INR 125 from the previous day at INR 5,350–INR 5,400 per 100 kg due to weak demand, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Demand from snack manufacturers has slowed due to issues related to gas supply availability amid the ongoing military conflict in West Asia, Kakani said. He said this could reduce production of namkeens, chips and other snack items, which account for a large share of chana consumption during the festive and wedding season.

 

According to the India Pulses and Grains Association, chana prices are expected to remain under pressure in the near term due to rising arrivals, higher imports, and weak demand. Prices are likely to stay below the minimum support price.

 

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady from the previous day at around INR 5,500 per 100 kg.

 

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady from the previous day at INR 8,100–INR 8,125 per 100 kg amid weak demand, Kedia said.

 

According to the India Pulses and Grains Association, tur prices are expected to fluctuate by around INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg in the near term as the market searches for a clear direction.

 

URAD prices in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, were up INR 100 from the previous day at INR 8,450 per 100 kg amid concerns over a possible decline in shipments from Myanmar due to rising freight and insurance costs linked to the West Asia conflict, according to the association. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,700–INR 8,700 per 100 kg.

 

According to the India Pulses and Grains Association, urad prices are expected to trade within a range in the near term as demand is likely to remain need-based. Millers are buying cautiously due to slow demand for processed urad as temperatures rise, the association said in its weekly report.  End
