NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday, weighed down by rising arrivals of the fresh crop, analysts said. Turmeric prices were steady on the exchange.

At 1617 IST, the most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down around 1.2% at INR 11,304 per 100 kg, as rising arrivals in Gujarat weighed on prices. However, prices are unlikely to witness further correction, supported by steady demand amid lower sowing, and a relatively weak crop outlook this season, which has kept the supply side tight, SMC Global Securities said in a note.

The most-active April contract of JEERA was down 0.5% at INR 22,330 per 100 kg mainly due to the arrival of the new crop in several markets. Arrivals have begun in key producing regions and are expected to pick up momentum from March onward, which has created some near-term pressure on prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Comfortable supplies and relatively weak export demand, supported by adequate existing stocks, have also weighed on market sentiment, the brokerage said.

However, the downside remains limited as overall production for the season is expected to decline. Output is estimated to fall around 5% to 513,000 tonnes this year, as per the brokerage.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was steady at INR 14,588 per 100 kg. SMC expects prices to consolidate near current levels before witnessing an estimated downside. The brokerage expects prices to trade within the INR 14,190-INR 14,990 per 100 kg range in the near term.

Meanwhile, arrivals have started picking up, with around 60,000 bags reported at the Nizamabad Mandi and about 12,000 bags at the Sangli Mandi Wednesday, per the brokerage. However, bulk arrivals from the Marathwada region are yet to begin and are expected to enter the market in the coming days, it said.
