MUMBAI – India's import of vegetable oils--edible as well as non-edible oils--rose 35% to 1.32 million tonnes in February from 977,477 tonnes a year ago, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India Thursday. Total edible oil imports in February rose to 1.29 million tonnes from 963,473 tonnes a year ago.

Crude soyoil imports rose to 299,046 tonnes in February from 283,737 tonnes a year ago while crude sunflower oil imports fell to 145,308 tonnes from 228,275 tonnes, the association said. Imports of crude palm oil rose significantly to 837,040 tonnes from 265,600 tonnes a year ago.

Refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil imports in February were at 10,649 tonnes compared with 109,301 tonnes a year ago. In the Nov-Feb period, only 22,237 tonnes of refined, bleached and deodorised palm oil was imported, compared with 593,801 tonnes a year ago.

"The ratio of refined oil sharply decreased to 2% from 16%, while crude oil ratio is increased to 98% from 84% due to rise in import of crude palm oil," the association said. The government increased the duty difference between crude and refined oils from 8.25% to 19.25% on May 31, which resulted in a drop in refined palm oil imports. However, under the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement--SAFTA--a large quantity of refined soybean and sunflower oil were shipped to India from Nepal at zero duty.

Crude palm oil imports in the first four months of oil year 2025-26 were 2.72 million tonnes compared with 1.38 million tonnes a year ago, it said. India's crude soyoil import during the same period rose to 1.45 million tonnes from 1.56 million tonnes a year ago, according to the association. During Nov-Feb, the country imported 904,765 tonnes of sunflower oil, lower than 1.12 million tonnes a year ago.

Indonesia and Malaysia are major suppliers of refined, bleached and deodorised palmolein and crude palm oil to India. During Nov-Feb, Indonesia was a major supplier of crude palm oil at 1.20 million tonnes followed by Malaysia, which supplied 1.10 million tonnes of crude palm oil, according to the release.

During Nov-Feb, total edible oil imports by India rose to 5.22 million tonnes from 4.89 million tonnes a year ago. Vegetable oil imports during Nov-Feb rose to 5.32 million tonnes from 5.02 million tonnes a year ago.

As of Mar. 1, domestic edible oil stocks at ports were 819,000 tonnes, down from 870,000 tonnes a year earlier. Pipeline stocks rose to 1.05 million tonnes from 1 million tonnes, the association said.

The following table details edible oil imports in February, in tonnes, compared with year-ago levels, with the change in percentage, according to data from the SEA:
