MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady as demand was limited, traders said. Prices could fall in the coming days as demand is unlikely to pick up, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady after cutting prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg. Mills were waiting to see if demand picked up at current prices levels, said Naresh Gupta, a traders from north India.
Given that this is a summer month, there could be demand from bulk consumers of sugar such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, said Gupta. "However, amid the ongoing military conflict in West Asia, and fall in supply of liquefied petroleum gas, many restaurants and eateries are shut, so it will impact the demand for the sweetener. Hence, prices will be largely steady," he added. In addition, higher output of sugar in the state could weigh on prices.
Ex-mill prices of sugar in Maharashtra were also steady due to need-based buying, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall in the coming days as demand from eateries will be subdued, Kuvadia added.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 4,030 per 100 kg in West Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 4,030 per 100 kg in Central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,805-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1550 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down nearly 1% at 14.13 cents per pound, on anticipation of higher global sugar output. End
