India receives 92% below normal rainfall at 0.5 mm in week to Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received an average of 0.5 millimetres rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 92?low the normal figure of 6.3 millimetres for the period, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department. Between Mar. 1 and Mar. 11, India received 0.9 millimetres of rain, 91?low the normal of 10.0 millimetres, as per the data.

 

All four homogeneous regions recorded below-normal rains during the week. In east and northeast India, 1.5 millimeters of rainfall was recorded, which is 85?low the normal of 10.0 millimetres, according to the data. Northwest India received 0.7 millimetres in the week, 93?low the normal of 10.4 millimetres.   

 

The central India region registered almost no rains, while the south peninsula region recorded rainfall of 0.3 millimetres, down 92% from the normal.

 

The weather bureau categorises the country into 36 subdivisions. Of these, 20 subdivisions received no rains during the week, while 14 were classified under large deficit category. One subdivision received normal rains, whereas one fell under deficit rains category. No subdivision received large excess or excess rains during the week, per the data.

 

Overall, 60% of the area in the country received no rains, 38% received large deficient rains, and 2% registered deficient rains during the week ended Wednesday.  End
