NEW DELHI – Prices of chana and tur fell across major markets Wednesday, while prices of urad were steady, traders said. Chana prices declined due to weak demand and steady arrivals, and tur prices fell due to sluggish demand. Urad prices remained unchanged in the absence of fresh market cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were down INR 50 from the previous day at INR 5,475–INR 5,500 per 100 kilograms, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices declined due to sluggish demand, he said.

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, prices of chana were down by INR 100 from the previous day at INR 5,500–INR 5,525 per 100 kg due to weak demand, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Demand from snack manufacturers has slowed due to issues related to gas supply availability amid the ongoing military conflict in West Asia, Kakani said.

"This will lead to a fall in production of namkeens, chips, and other snack items, which account for a bulk of chana purchases during the festive and marriage season," he said, adding that prices may decline by another INR 200 per 100 kg if the supply issues persist.

According to a report by the India Pulses and Grains Association, chana prices are expected to remain under pressure in the near term due to rising arrivals, higher imports, and weak demand. Prices are likely to stay below the minimum support price.

In Delhi, prices of chana were down by INR 100 from the previous day at around INR 5,500 per 100 kg.

TUR prices in Akola were down by INR 100 from the previous day to INR 8,100–INR 8,125 per 100 kg due to weak demand, Kedia said.

According to the association's report, tur prices are expected to fluctuate by INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg in the near term as the market searches for clear direction. Trading activity remains low as many markets are gradually returning to normal operations after the Holi holidays. Arrivals and trading activity are expected to normalise by next week, the association said in its weekly report.

URAD prices in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,350 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,700–INR 8,700 per 100 kg.

Urad prices are likely to trade in a range in the near term as demand is expected to remain need-based, traders said. Millers are buying cautiously due to slow demand for processed urad as temperatures rise, the association said in its weekly report.   End
