MUMBAI – Futures contracts of aluminium on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India and the London Metal Exchange rose Wednesday due to concerns about supply amid the ongoing military conflict in West Asia. Copper prices edged lower on the domestic bourse, tracking a fall in contracts on the LME because of a rise in the dollar index.

"...aluminium continues to draw support from supply disruptions in the Middle East (West Asia), where ongoing conflict has curtailed production and shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for producers responsible for roughly 9% of global output," Kotak Securities said in a report.

Closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for West Asian producers to transport the metal and raw materials, has led to major producers cutting output. Aluminium Bahrain, one of the world's largest aluminium producers, has declared force majeure on supply contracts, citing the closure of the Strait. This follows the controlled shutdown of output at Qatalum, an aluminium smelter plant jointly owned by Qatar's state-owned aluminium producer and Norsk Hydro.

COPPER prices fell because of a firm dollar. Rising inventories aross exchanges has also weighed on market sentiment. However, "demand signals from China remain supportive, with spot premiums rising as the earlier price correction encouraged downstream procurement from the construction and renewable energy sectors," Kotak said.
