MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has raised its estimate of global wheat production in 2025-26 to 842.12 million tonnes from its previous estimate of 841.80 million tonnes, it said in the March edition of its monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. This upward revision is mainly on account of increased output from Ukraine and Kazakhstan that is partly offset by lower production for Australia, the report said.
The opening stocks estimate has been lowered marginally to 259.63 million tonnes, while consumption projection has been raised slightly to 165.46 million tonnes for 2025-26.
Adjusted for imports and exports, the year-ending stocks of wheat have now been estimated at 276.96 million tonnes, down from 277.51 million tonnes estimated earlier, the report said.
For India, most figures remained unchanged – production at 117.95 million tonnes, opening stocks at 11.80 million tonnes, and consumption at 112.51 million tonnes. The closing stocks, however, are seen falling to 17.19 million tonnes from the earlier estimate of 17.24 million tonnes.
RICE
Global rice production is estimated at 541.28 million tonnes for 2025-26, nearly unchanged from the previous estimate, the report said. Global rice supplies are estimated at 732.50 million tonnes, marginally down from the earlier estimate of 732.59 million tonnes .
World consumption of rice is lowered to 540.96 million tonnes from 541.7 million tonnes, "mostly on reduced consumption estimates for several African countries," the report said.
Global ending stocks are now expected at 191.54 million tonnes, up from 190.88 million tonnes estimated a month ago, "as higher stocks for India are not completely offset by reductions for several countries."
For India, the department has kept its estimate for 2025-26 rice production unchanged at 152.0 million tonnes. Consumption is also seen unchanged at 127.0 million tonnes. It now expects rice exports from the country at 24 million tonnes, down from the previous estimate of 25 million tonnes. Year-ending stocks have been projected at 49 million tonnes, up from the earlier estimate of 48 million tonnes. End
