NEW DELHI – Wheat prices in key markets of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh rose Tuesday as demand for the old crop improved. Buyers are preferring last year's wheat stocks as most arrivals of the recently harvested crop have high moisture content, traders said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were up by INR 25 from Monday at INR 2,275-INR 2,350 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals of old crop were steady at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), but arrivals of the new crop fell by half to 15,000 bags, Mehta said. Prices of the new crop were INR 2,150-INR 2,230 per 100 kg, lower than the price of the old stock due to concerns about quality, Mehta said.

Going ahead, rising arrivals of the new crop and comfortable carry-forward stocks with bulk consumers are likely to keep wheat prices under pressure. The government has estimated production of wheat in 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) at a record 120.2 million tonnes, according to the agriculture ministry's second advance estimates. Last year, India produced 117.9 million tonnes of wheat.

The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was up INR 30 at INR 2,480 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. The price in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said wholesale trader Devendra Vora.

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 1,780 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, local trader, said. Market participants expect prices to fall with the commencement of new rabi crop arrivals. India's kharif and rabi maize production are estimated at record 30.25 million tonnes and 15.9 million tonnes, respectively. Last year, the total maize output was 43.4 million tonnes.

RICE prices were largely steady in major markets, traders said. Prices of the 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice in Kota were steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg, Ravi Mehta said. Abundant carry-forward stocks and expectations of rise in supplies with the commencement of rabi paddy arrivals are likely to put pressure on prices. Moreover, exports to West Asia remain uncertain amid the ongoing conflict.

Rice production in the kharif season is estimated at a record 123.9 million tonnes, and rabi rice output is seen at 16.7 million tonnes. Last year, the total rice output was 150.2 million tonnes.  End
