NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices rose Tuesday on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange. Turmeric rose as traders increased purchases after prices fell to an over-three-month low in the previous session. Jeera rose amid improved demand and tight supplies, and coriander prices were largely steady.
The most active April contract of TURMERIC ended up over 1% at INR 14,772 per 100 kg, as traders increased purchases at lower price levels. On Monday, the contract hit INR 14,082, the lowest level since November. "Farmers and stockists have already reduced inventories significantly, which is providing a supportive base ahead of the new crop supplies," Kedia Advisory said in a note.
Though shipments to West Asia are impacted amid conflicts in the region, export demand from Europe and US remains healthy, according to analysts. However, expectations of rising supplies in Erode, Tamil Nadu, are likely to create near-term pressure on prices.
The most active April contract of JEERA ended up 2.3% at INR 22,550 per 100 kg, as limited arrivals in Unjha, Rajasthan, supported prices. Supplies are likely to remain tight in the near term as new crop arrivals will only improve significantly from March, according to analysts. "At Unjha, one of the country's largest cumin markets, arrivals remain limited for now, with premium-quality cumin still fetching better prices," Kedia Advisory said in a note.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER ended down 0.1% at INR 11,566 per 100 kg. While purchases to replenish depleted inventories were supporting prices, expectations of higher supplies in Gujarat in the coming weeks weighed on prices. SMC Global Securities sees the contract trading around INR 11,510–INR 11,650 range in the coming days.
Following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at closing at 1700 IST:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
