NEW DELHI/MUMBAI – The government has estimated India's foodgrain production at 348.7 million tonnes in 2025-26 (Jul-Jun), up 5.4% on year, driven by higher output of wheat, rice and maize. In its second advance estimates for 2025-26, the agriculture ministry estimated kharif foodgrain output at 174.1 million tonnes, up from 166.4 million tonnes a year ago, while rabi foodgrain production has been pegged at 174.5 million tonnes, up from 164.5 million tonnes estimated in the second advance estimate of 2024-25.
The country's kharif rice output is estimated at 123.9 million tonnes, up from 120.7 million tonnes a year ago, while rabi rice production is seen at 16.7 million tonnes, up from 15.8 million tonnes.
Production of wheat, the main rabi crop, is estimated at 120.2 million tonnes, up from 115.4 million tonnes in the previous year. Among pulses, tur production is estimated at 3.5 million tonnes, unchanged from last year, while chana output is pegged at 11.8 million tonnes, up from 11.5 million tonnes last year. Masur output is projected at 1.7 million tonnes, marginally down from 1.8 million tonnes a year ago.
Kharif maize production is estimated at a record 30.2 million tonnes, up from 24.8 million tonnes a year ago, while rabi maize output is pegged at 15.9 million tonnes, up from 12.4 million tonnes.
The government has pegged kharif oilseed output at 26.5 million tonnes, down from 27.6 million tonnes last year, and rabi oilseed production at 14.5 million tonnes, up from 14.0 million tonnes. Within oilseeds, soybean output is estimated at 12.7 million tonnes, down from 15.1 million tonnes a year ago, while rapeseed and mustard production is pegged at 13.3 million tonnes, higher than 12.9 million tonnes last year.
Production of kharif groundnut is estimated at 11.3 million tonnes, up from 10.4 million tonnes a year ago. Among commercial crops, sugarcane production is estimated at 500.2 million tonnes, sharply up from 435.1 million tonnes last year.
Cotton output is estimated at 29.1 million bales, down from 29.4 million bales in the previous year. One cotton bale weighs 170 kg. Jute production is estimated at 8.1 million bales, down from 8.3 million bales a year ago. One bale of jute weighs 180 kg.
The estimates are based on crop area data received from states and validated using inputs from remote sensing, the Weekly Crop Weather Watch Group, and other agencies, the ministry said.
