Gujarat summer crop area up 14% on year at 461,353 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops in Gujarat reached 461,353 hectares as of Monday, up 14% from 404,056 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the summer crop season, which is the average of the last three years, is 1.18 million hectares, of which nearly 39% has been covered.
The acreage under paddy rose to 122,144 hectares from 120,720 hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under maize was down at 3,309 hectares from 3,792 hectares a year ago, while that of bajra rose to 60,416 hectares from 57,336 hectares last year.
Moong acreage in the state so far was 18,482 hectares, up from 12,518 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under urad also rose to 6,438 hectares from 2,813 hectares last year.
The total area sown under all summer oilseeds in the state was up at 74,079 hectares from 49,123 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. The area sown under groundnut was 23,431 hectares, up from 14,397 hectares sown in the previous year. Sesame acreage also rose to 50,648 hectares from 34,726 hectares last year.
The area under vegetables rose to 51,044 hectares from 43,370 hectares a year ago. The area sown under onions, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 5,614 hectares, up from 2,213 hectares last year. Sugarcane acreage was up at 8,354 hectares from 8,276 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer. End
