MUMBAI – Mustard seed prices rose in Jaipur on firm demand from millers for the good-quality new arrivals but were steady in Kota, traders said. Soybean and groundnut prices were steady in key markets, they added.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose by INR 125 per 100 kilograms to INR 6,825-INR 6,850 per 100 kg on firm demand for seeds with higher oil content, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Mustard seed arrivals across the country were estimated at 950,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Arrivals on Friday were at 725,000 bags.

However, traders said expectations of higher rabi season output of mustard seed may push prices down. Rabi mustard acreage was at 8.94 million hectares, up 3.2% on year, according to data from the agriculture ministry.

In Kota, also in Rajasthan, mustard seed prices were steady at INR 6,350 per 100 kg, according to Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals were at 16,000 bags, up 1,000 bags from the previous day, he said.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,700-INR 5,450 per 100 kg due to need-based demand from millers, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 2,700 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), same as on the previous day. The government has sold stocks of soybean at INR 5,050 per 100 kg, which is why supplies increased in the domestic market, traders said.

Soybean prices in Kota were steady at INR 5,351 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals were at 9,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), same as on the previous day, he said. As the government is selling stock in the open market at lower prices, traders are rushing to buy the subsidised soybean. As a result, farmers are holding back their stocks because there is little demand at higher prices.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 3,150-INR 8,050 per 100 kg, according to Porwal. Arrivals were at 3,500 bags (1 bag = 30 kg), unchanged from the previous day. Groundnut prices could increase in the near term on concern about lower output, traders said.
