NEW DELHI – The area sown under summer crops across India stood at 3.17 million hectares as of Friday, down over 5% from 3.34 million hectares in the corresponding period last year, according to agriculture ministry data. The area under rice, the largest summer crop by both acreage and production, was 2.53 million hectares, down nearly 6% from 2.69 million hectares a year ago.
The area sown under coarse cereals fell by over 8% on year to 251,000 hectares, the data showed. The acreage under maize, the leading summer coarse cereal in terms of area and production, declined to 172,000 hectares from 188,000 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra was 46,000 hectares, down from 53,000 hectares at the same time last year.
The total area sown under pulses was 159,000 hectares, up over 1% from 157,000 hectares a year ago. Moong acreage fell over 3% to 95,000 hectares, while urad acreage declined to 45,000 hectares from 46,000 hectares last year.
The total area sown under oilseeds rose about 5% on year to 229,000 hectares, the data showed. The area under groundnut was 158,000 hectares, up from 150,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under sesame edged down to 49,000 hectares from 50,000 hectares.
The normal acreage during the summer crop season, based on the average area covered from 2022-23 (Jul-Jun) to 2024-25, was 7.54 million hectares. The summer crop season in India runs between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically spanning from March to June.
