MUMBAI – The government has set a wheat procurement target of 30.3 million tonnes in the rabi marketing season 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). The government has also set a target to procure 7.6 million tonnes of rabi rice and 779,000 tonnes of coarse grains including millets, according to a release by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution.
Last year, the wheat procurement target was revised upward to 33.27 million tonnes, from the initial aim of 31.27 million tonnes. Against this, the government bought 30.1 million tonnes of wheat from farmers. The government has missed its wheat procurement target for the past three years. Market estimates India's wheat production in the crop year 2025-26 (Jul–Jun) around 117.5 million tonnes. Last year, the country's wheat output was at a record 117.9 million tonnes.
Food Corp. of India and state agencies will procure wheat from farmers at the minimum support price of INR 2,585 per 100 kg in the upcoming rabi marketing season. The wheat procurement window typically runs from April to the end of June.
The procurement level was decided at a meeting of food secretaries of various states and officers of Food Corp. of India where several factors impacting procurement, public distribution, and storage of food grains were also reviewed, according to the release.
The government has initiated a pilot in five states for the supply of improved rice with up to 10% broken grains. States have been requested to provide feedback on the implementation of the same, it said. End
