MCX clearing arm divides commodities into 3 brackets on realised volatility

MUMBAI – Multi Commodity Exchange Clearing Corp. Ltd. Friday said it has categorised commodities based on their realised volatility and classified these into three categories of volatility – low, medium, and high. The clearing corp has accordingly provided the applicable minimum initial margin, short option minium margin, minimum margin period of risk, and minimum volatility scan range.

 

For agri commodities, an additional lean period margin of 2% will be imposed on contracts expiring during the lean period, it said in a circular. Details of the lean period will be available on the website of the lead exchange. These provisions will be applicable from Apr. 1.

 

Crude oil, silver, nickel, natural gas, cardamom, and electricity have been put under the 'high' volatility category. Aluminium, copper, cotton oil, gold, kapas, steel rebar, and zinc under the 'medium' volatility category, and cotton, lead, and mentha oil under the 'low' category, according to the circular.  End
