MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in Maharashtra on Friday due to sluggish demand, traders said. Sweetener prices were, however, steady in Uttar Pradesh amid limited demand, they said.

Ex-mill prices of sugar in Maharashtra fell INR 5 per 100 kilograms, as demand failed to pick up at higher levels, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain rangebound if demand does not improve, he said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady after raising rates the previous day, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. There was limited demand at higher prices, he said. Mills had increased prices the previous day, even though there was only need-based demand, as mills were not in a hurry to offload stocks and meet the quota at the beginning of the month, Gupta said.

Prices in Uttar Pradesh are unlikely to rise because of higher sugar output in the state and lower-than-expected sale quota for the month, Gupta said. Any gains in sweetener rates will be capped as the state's sugar output rose over 2% on year to 7.4 million tonnes in Oct-Feb. The average sugar recovery has risen to 10.05% from 9.45% last year, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 4,050 per 100 kg in West Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,925-INR 4,050 per 100 kg in Central Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 5 at INR 3,805-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Down INR 5 at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1730 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 1.3% at 13.90 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil prices on the NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, reducing sugar availability.  End
