NEW DELHI – The All India Sugar Trade Association has cut its estimate on sugar production in the 2025–26 (Oct-Sept) season to 28.3 million tonnes, down from 29.6 million tonnes projected in January. The trade body has revised down its second advance estimates for the season as output in major sugar-producing states is likely to fall due to adverse weather conditions.
Last month, the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association cut its estimate on sugar production in 2025-26 to 29.3 million tonnes from 30.95 million tonnes earlier. India had produced 26.2 million tonnes of sugar in 2024-25.
Maharashtra's sugar production is now estimated at 9.9 million tonnes, down from 10.8 million tonnes earlier. Extended cloudy weather conditions during the maturation stage and waterlogging in the Marathwada region are posing serious crop concerns in the state, according to the trade body.
Uttar Pradesh's sugar output is seen at 9.1 million tonnes, down from 9.4 million tonnes previously projected. "In UP (Uttar Pradesh), though the sugar recovery has shown an increase by about half a percent, still the yield remained a major concern," the association said. Strong competition from jaggery units for sugarcane also reduced supply to sugar mills in the state, it added.
Meanwhile, Karnataka's output is estimated at 4.8 million tonnes, marginally down from 4.9 million tonnes earlier. The latest estimate includes special season production of about 200,000 tonnes in the Mandya region of Karnataka, subject to the availability of sugarcane for crushing, it added. End
