Andhra Pradesh rabi area up 44% on yr at 2.65 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops in Andhra Pradesh progressed to 2.65 million hectares as of Wednesday, up nearly 44% from 1.84 million hectares covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The ongoing rabi acreage has surpassed the season's normal of 2.07 million hectares.

 

Paddy acreage increased to 891,000 hectares from 656,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize also rose to 483,000 hectares from 180,000 hectares a year ago, and that under jowar was up at 108,000 hectares from 75,000 hectares last year.

 

The area sown under chana was 388,000 hectares, up from 301,000 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under urad rose to 329,000 hectares from 277,000 hectares a year ago, while that under moong rose to 77,000 hectares from 55,000 hectares last year. The area sown under all rabi pulses so far was 886,000 hectares, up from 733,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds was 127,000 hectares, up from 69,000 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was up at 87,000 hectares from 52,000 hectares last year.

 

Tobacco acreage in the state fell to 112,000 hectares from 119,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Cotton acreage was up at 15,000 hectares from 1,000 hectares last year.

 

From Mar. 1-Mar. 4, which is the summer period, the state recorded 0.4 millimetres of rainfall, 90.9% below normal for the period. "All the Major reservoirs is holding 464.22 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) as on 04.03.2026 (Wednesday), at this time last year, the level had stood at 418.06 tmc," the report said.  End
