India Apr-Dec spices exports up 11% at 1.35 mln tn, jeera down 12%

MUMBAI – India's spices exports rose 11% on year to 1.35 million tonnes in Apr-Dec from 1.21 million tonnes a year ago, according to data released by Spices Board of India. In terms of value, exports were up 0.5% on year at $3.32 billion.
According to the data, India exported 156,671 tonnes of jeera in Apr-Dec, down 12% from the year-ago period. Exports of fennel fell the most during the period, by 61% to 26,251 tonnes. Exports of celery fell 35% to 4,406 tonnes. Pepper imports fell 6% to 14,477 tonnes during the same time.
On the other hand, exports of small cardamom rose the most by 116% to 10,633 tonnes during Apr-Dec, and large cardamom exports rose 16% to 1,063 tonnes. Exports of ginger surged 62% to 106,945 tonnes during the period. Curry powder and paste saw an increase of 42% in export during the period at 80,363 tonnes.
Coriander exports rose 10% on year during Apr-Dec to 47,891 tonnes and turmeric exports rose 4% on year to 142,386 tonnes, the data showed. Other spices that recorded a sizeable increase in exports included chilli, garlic, and tamarind.
