MUMBAI – Prices of chana and urad were steady on Thursday while prices of tur fell in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices fell due to muted demand and weak market sentiment, they said. Prices of chana were unchanged as low demand matched low supply. Prices of urad were steady due to the absence of fresh cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices are unchanged as demand and supply are low and on par, he said. "There is low demand and arrivals of the new rabi crop have not increased as much yet," he said. Arrivals of the new crop have begun in small batches, and millers are purchasing "whatever is coming to the market" to fulfil their need-based demand, he said. The quality of new arrivals is satisfactory, he said.

Prices are expected to fall once arrivals of the new crop rise in the near term, Kakani said. Though the government had announced that it would procure the legume two weeks ago, it is yet to do so. "Prices could have been supported in the near term if the government began procurement, but like last year, it will probably begin late this year as well due to their (the government's) lack of funds," he said. The government has begun the process of procuring grains such as wheat already as they are prioritised over pulses, he said. Prices are likely to rise by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg once procurement begins, he said.

The government has approved the procurement of 2.31 million tonnes of chana across the country at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, with 580,000 tonnes to be purchased in Madhya Pradesh.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,60-INR 5,625 per 100 kg, traders said.

Prices of new TUR crop in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 100 per 100 kg from Wednesday to INR 7,500-INR 8,200 per 100 kg while prices of old tur were steady at INR 7,200-INR 7,650 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About 10–11 trucks with 20,000–25,000 kg each of new tur, and 3–4 trucks with old stock of tur arrived in the market, he said.

Prices fell amid poor demand even as arrivals of the new crop declined, Srinivas said. "The market can't decide on a level for prices--we still don't know whether arrivals of the new crop will decrease sooner this year or continue as usual, and we don't know whether we will see a rise in demand for tur dal (or processed tur) anytime soon," he said. Arrivals of the new crop from Karnataka have already decreased, while those from Maharashtra could decline sooner-than-expected due to lower production this year, he said. Crops in both states have been affected by adverse weather conditions, though the extent of crop loss is still not known, he said. Meanwhile, demand is expected to remain need-based in the near term due to comfortable stocks with millers and traders and sluggish demand for tur dal, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 100 to INR 8,000-INR 8,025 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,625-INR 7,650 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,700-INR 8,700 per 100 kg. Prices were steady due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

Arrivals of the new rabi crop could put pressure on prices in the near term, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. In Andhra Pradesh, arrivals of the new crop are expected to increase in the next 10 days. However, a steep fall in prices is unlikely as the quality of the new crop is reportedly good, which is expected to support market sentiment and increase demand in the medium term, it said.  End
