Telangana rabi acreage up 7% on yr at 7.72 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops in Telangana progressed to 7.72 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up over 7% from 7.19 million acres sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the state's normal rabi area of 6.87 million acres.
The area sown under paddy was up at 5.73 million acres from 5.54 million acres a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under maize rose to 1.15 million acres from 771,024 acres last year, and that of jowar was also up at 303,915 acres from 236,210 acres a year ago.
Chana acreage in the state fell to 186,985 acres from 219,970 acres last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad slipped to 36,412 acres from 46,372 acres a year ago, while that of moong was also down at 7,101 acres from 10,497 acres last year. The total area sown under all rabi pulses was 238,464 acres, down from 288,847 acres sown last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 234,010 acres, down from 285,588 acres covered in the previous year, the report showed. The acreage under groundnut fell to 192,565 acres from 236,739 acres last year. The area sown under sesame was also down at 12,746 acres from 20,736 acres a year ago.
Tobacco acreage in the state fell to 11,000 acres from 14,954 acres last year, according to the report. The area sown under sugarcane rose to 17,417 acres from 11,943 acres a year ago.
During northeast monsoon, which spans from Oct. 1-Dec. 31, the state received 189.6 millimetres of rainfall, 72?ove normal for the period. From Jan. 1–Feb. 28— which is termed as winter rainfall— the state recorded a 48?ficit in rainfall, the report said. The state has not recorded any rainfall in March so far. "The good rainfall received across the State is expected to facilitate favourable soil moisture conditions, leading to improved crop coverage during the current Yasangi (rabi) season," it said.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 560.18 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 497.49 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report. End
