MUMBAI – Prices of pulses in most key markets across the country were unavailable as they were shut for Holi, traders said. Prices of chana and tur were unchanged in Akola, Maharashtra, amid no market activity, they said. Markets will reopen Thursday, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola were steady at INR 5,500-INR 5,511 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. TUR prices in the market were also steady at INR 8,175-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, he said. While the market is open, there is no activity as many participants are away for Holi, he said. "There are no arrivals nor any buyers in the market today," he said.

Chana prices are expected to remain under pressure in the short term amid sluggish demand and ample availability, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan remains low, while millers are making only need-based purchases, it said. Easy availability of new crop arrivals and imports is also weighing on prices, it said.

Prices of tur are expected to be range-bound in the near term amid muted demand and steady supply, the association said. Domestic arrivals of the legume are expected to be steady as prices remain on par or above the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg, encouraging farmers to offload their stocks. A sharp increase in arrivals is unlikely as some farmers may prefer selling their chana and wheat crop over tur for immediate cash needs, the association said.

Most markets in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Maharashtra are shut for Holi, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. URAD prices were unavailable as markets were shut, traders said.

Urad prices are likely to be range-bound in the near term amid need-based demand and comfortable supply, the association said. Demand from millers has declined due to lower demand for urad dal, or processed urad, amid rising temperatures, it said. Consumption of certain pulses declines in hot weather. Prices could also be weighed down by an expected rise in imports from Myanmar, it said.  End
