NEW DELHI – Electricity generation in India fell 1.6% on year in February to 119.56 billion kilowatt-hours, data released by the Central Electricity Authority of India showed. In January, India's total power generation from all sources was 128.99 billion kilowatt-hours.
Electricity production declined in February mainly because of a fall in thermal power generation, the biggest source of power in India. Electricity imported from Bhutan also declined February. However, the fall in total electricity generation was contained by a sharp rise in production in the nuclear power and hydroelectric power generation segments.
Thermal power generation fell 3% on year in February to 107.03 billion kilowatt-hours while nuclear power generation was up 17.3% on year at 4.87 billion kilowatt-hours. Hydroelectric power generation rose 9.8% to 7.65 billion kilowatt-hours.
For Apr-Feb, total electricity produced in the country was 1.402 trillion kilowatt-hours, down 2.5% on year. This accounts for over 81% of the total electricity generation target of 1.725 trillion kilowatt-hours for the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
