Gujarat summer crop area up 16% on yr at 315,805 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops in Gujarat reached 315,805 hectares as of Monday, up over 16% from 271,470 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the summer crop season, which is the average of the last three years, is 1.18 million hectares, of which nearly 27% has been covered.

 

The acreage under paddy fell to 97,502 hectares from 106,304 hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under maize was also down at 2,392 hectares from 2,968 hectares a year ago, while that of bajra rose to 37,356 hectares from 32,529 hectares last year.

 

Moong acreage in the state so far was 9,359 hectares, up from 6,581 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under urad also rose to 3,499 hectares from 837 hectares last year.

 

The total area sown under all summer oilseeds in the state was up at 47,385 hectares from 24,485 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage rose to 16,457 hectares from 8,326 hectares a year ago, and that of sesame was up at 30,928 hectares from 16,159 hectares last year.

 

The area sown under vegetables rose to 35,158 hectares from 28,190 hectares a year ago. The area sown under onion, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 4,760 hectares, up from 870 hectares last year. Sugarcane acreage was up at 6,810 hectares from 6,718 hectares a year ago.

 

In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer.  End
