NEW DELHI – In order to deal with supply chain disruptions, an inter-ministerial group for supply chain resilience has been constituted under the Department of Commerce. "The inter-ministerial group will monitor global developments affecting supply chains, assess sector-wise export and critical import vulnerabilities, facilitate coordination among ministries/departments, engage with stakeholders including export promotion councils, and recommend appropriate mitigation measures, wherever required," a notice from Directorate General of Foreign Trade said.
Under this, an internal coordination mechanism has also been established within DGFT to enable real-time tracking of issues and inter-agency coordination, it said. The ministry said trade and industry stakeholders may bring up specific issues related to supply chain disruptions for consolidation and monitoring.
The panel will have members from Department of Financial Services, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Shipping, Ports & Waterways, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs, to facilitate effective coordination, monitoring and follow-up, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on microblogging site X. The government remains firmly committed to enable a stable and responsive trade environment for traders and exporters, safeguarding their interests and ensuring seamless operations, he said.
This comes in the backdrop of Israel and the US Saturday attacking Iran and killing hundreds, including the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei. Iran has since retaliated against Israel and targetted US military facilities around the Persian Gulf. According to reports, the Iranian military has ordered the shut-down of the Strait of Hormuz, a passage which is used to transport about a third of the world's crude oil. End
